How to Protect I.D. cards From Wallet Theft 2013-02-28
We all have heard horror stories about the damage that can be done when a person's identification cards are stolen. Naturally, we all want to do everything we can to protect ourselves in case a wallet containing credit cards or ID cards is stolen. Follow these steps.
1 Photocopy each ID card in your possession: credit cards, membership cards, driver's licenses, insurance tags and all others. Copy both the front and the back so that you will have a contact and number to call if the card is ever lost or stolen. Keep these photocopies in a locked safe or other very secure location.
2 Write the words "Photo ID required" on the back of a credit or membership card instead of giving your signature. Anyone who needs to verify your identity will know that you feel comparing signatures is not enough. Instead, they will need to confirm that the person offering the card is genuinely its owner.
3 Call the card companies immediately if your wallet is lost or stolen. Use the photocopies you made to get the number. Companies that offer credit or ID cards are as eager to detect a theft as you are, so you can expect that they will be helpful. Be prepared to give the date, time and location, if you can, that the card went missing.
4 File a police report as soon as possible in the area where your card went missing, rather than waiting to file a report at home.
5 Notify all three national credit organizations if credit cards have been stolen. Their phone numbers are listed in the "Tips" section of this article.
6 Alert the Social Security Administration fraud line at 800-269-0271 if your Social Security card has been stolen.
